Certified Prosthetist Orthotist

Asheville, NC

Tara Roy, MS, CPO, is a certified prosthetist orthotist in Ability Ottobock.care’s Asheville office.

While taking a career placement test in high school, Tara stumbled upon the orthotic and prosthetic industry and it has been her passion ever since. Tara was initially drawn to the patient care integration with engineering design and rehabilitation within O&P care, but has grown to love so much more about the profession.

Tara received her Bachelors degree in Biomedical Engineering from Harding University in Arkansas. For her senior engineering thesis, Tara was part of collaborative team that designed and built a surgical reloading system for the SonicWeld Rx by KLS Martin for craniosynostosis surgeries conducted at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. This patented device reduced the surgical time in the operational room through instantaneous reloading of the ultrasonic drill for skull reconfiguration.

Tara went on to receive her Masters degree in Orthotics and Prosthetics from Baylor College of Medicine in Texas. For her Masters thesis, Tara conducted a study to investigate the communication discrepancies between certified orthotists prosthetists (CPOs) and physical therapists (PTs) in regards to setting mutual patient goals.

During her residency training, Tara practiced in various clinical settings within Arkansas, Tennessee, and Florida. Tara fell in love with pediatric care while at Arkansas Children’s Hospital where she provided cranial remolding and orthotic care as well as pre/post-op counseling to children undergoing amputation. Her other clinical experience includes bilateral amputation care, transtibial care, transradial care, partial hands, and scoliosis management. In addition to being a CPO clinician, Tara has been a research curator for the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists (AAOP) since 2019.

In her spare time, Tara enjoys playing recreational sports such as volleyball and rugby, as well as participating in Asheville’s adventurous outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, rafting, and spelunking.
